Crocus

According to legend the Greek Gods Zeus & Hura loved each other so passionately that the land where they lived burst open with crocuses.

Not quite the case here but at least a quarter of the 200 I planted in August 2010 managed to survive.

I spotted a primrose flowering in the dark outside my back door this morning.

Apparently, if you hang a spray of primroses on your door, you will attract fairies to visit and give fairy blessings.

Not a bean was grown in 2011... Obviously this was a well thought out plan on my behalf to leave the ground fallow in order to produce a bumper 2012 crop.

The snowdrops are emerging and according to legend, Eve expelled from the Garden of Eden was about to give up hope that the cold winter would ever end. An Angel appeared and transformed some snowflakes into snowdrop flowers, proving that the winters do eventually give way to the spring.

I'll hold that thought.

Plant of the Month

January is not my favourite month. While moping about the veg plot looking at all the dead and rotting vegetation it was wonderful to spot the first shoots of rhubarb forcing their way up.

I got very excited when I spotted what looked like a pigeon with big feet in the garden. I took loads of photos expecting Spouse to declare it a huge rarity.

It turned out to be a Moorhen, common throughout the UK but a first in the garden.

Sadly, Herefordshire didn't get the much anticipated snow although it is cold enough for the chicken's water to have completely frozen. A kettle full of hot water thawed it enough for them to have a drink this morning.

In Slavonia, Croatia when a baby is born, a quince tree gets planted as a symbol of fertility, love and life.

Not so in Hereford - however a friend with a quince orchard has given me enough to try my hand at membrillo.

Although a little late, there were enough hips on my 2008 dog roses to make a jar of jelly.

Its a shame I don't have a chinchilla as rose hips are a popular healthy treat - providing a sugarless, safe way to increase their Vitamin C (they lack the internal organs to process many vitamin C rich foods)

The geraniums and pelargoniums are now safely in the glasshouse for the winter. I'm never totally sure which is what but like geranium, the name pelagornium has Greek roots that refer to the long seed that the plant produces. Pelagornium means "stork," and geranos means "crane."

I've never managed to grow dahlias before this year. Today they are in full bloom as everything else is being cut back for composting. I'm converted.

Apparently, they are edible and are often used in Mexico used to brighten up a dish of rice or as a garnish. I think I will leave mine to brighten up the garden.

The netting has worked and I seem to have my first ever decent crop of cabbage on the way.

Now it's time to test the Egyptian theory - pharoahs would eat large quantities of cabbage before a night of drinking, believing that their consumption would allow them to drink more alcoholic beverages without feeling the effects.

My Wiggly Layers Mash with Bokashi arrived yesterday and the chickens are scoffing away. According to the Wigglers, the micro-organisms in Bokashi help to improve the microflora in the gut.

"Feeds enhanced with them can help keep your wildfowl healthy generally, but there's another big advantage too: the beneficial micro-organisms work to reduce the bad smells from the animal's dung."

We will put that to the test on the next coop cleaning day.

To quote Sarah Raven, "recommended by many foodies, this is a wonderful courgette with characteristic ribs down the fruit. It has excellent flavour and texture, not ever turning watery, even when quite large. Picked small and whole, the flavour reminds me of globe artichoke hearts. Dood's cherry tree is cropping really well and Godchild brought round a full bag in exchange for some eggs.

Appropriately with the World Cup final tonight, the 11th Hussars nickname 'Cherrypickers' came from an incident during the Peninsular War, in which they were attacked while raiding a cherry orchard at San Martin de Trebejo in Spain.

The Romans are reported to have used cucumbers to treat bad eyesight, and to scare away mice. The latter will upset the cat.

This hosepipe is marking where my pond might be next year. All the grass around it will be replaced with gravel (less mowing for Spouse) and the grim cherry will be replaced with a rose clad pergola reminiscent of the M&G garden at Chelsea.

The grotty patio will be a border and the herbaceous borders replaced with an avenue of apple trees and box hedging.

The river banks are full of wildflowers at the moment including comfrey which I have picked for tomato feed. Apparently, the leaves can be cooked and eaten but they make only a ”tolerable vegetable” and according to John Lindley (1853) “not, however, valued by persons of refined taste.”

Yesterday we visited Glan Arrow in Eardisland, open under the ngs scheme. Oh to have a veg plot like this one... not to mention the river Arrow alongside, famously crossed by Henry Tudor on his way to Bosworth Field. Spouse sent me a link telling me that hens foraging on pasture produce eggs containing 34% less cholesterol than those on industrial feed which is good news as we are getting 6 per day.

My Malvern purchaces include three agapanthus. As their leaves have anti-inflammatory properties, herbalists suggest that weary gardeners wrap their feet in the leaves for half an hour at the end of the day.

Considering that every agapanthus I have previously planted died, I don't hold much hope of testing this theory.

This year, the potatoes in a bin are thriving in the greenhouse and I bought 6 healthy tomato plants from the garden centre yesterday.

Last time I visited Helegan in 2005 I loved this apple arch walk but there was nowhere for it to go in my small back garden. Recently I have been thinking of replacing the borders of our path with an avenue of apples and after revisiting Helegan, I think I will plagiarise.

Over three weeks later than last year, the asparagus is starting to appear. As they were planted in 2008 as one year olds, theoretically we should be able to eat some this year.

The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America claims that during World War II survival training, Secret Agents were instructed to eat asparagus before "swimming" in rivers where a sulphur-containing trail would attract fish, making them easier to catch.

It appears that Feargal is a 'mouser' specialising in shrews. English folklore says that if a shrew ran over an animal, the animal would be caused intense pain. To stop the pain a shrew would be chased up an ash tree and a twig from the tree used to brush the animal.

Having spent 20 minutes chasing this one round the kitchen with a jam jar (and excited cat) I would like to see them try.

... is that he is a tree expert and extremely knowledgeable all round gardener. Tarquin pointed out that the leylandii hedge that screens the neighbours is unsightly and came up with some far more suitable suggestions to fit in with my plans of stone walls, ponds, deck (over the tank) and patio removal. He also told me to ditch the ailing cherry and replace it with something beautiful. I fear he is right.

All I need is one big lottery win and I'm there!

We called in at Ornamental Tree Nurseries en route home from Bryan's Ground where Mel and I couldn't resist a Magnolia Stellata each. The only downside was there wasn't enough room in the car for the plants, Tarquin and Spouse. Spouse sat in the boot.

Today we visited Bryan's Ground which has gave us plenty of ideas. Both Mel and I are now keen to try some hawthorn topiary after seeing photographs of these skeletal frames covered with frost.

In Irish folklore, the Hawthorn is also referred to as the Faery Bush, and it is considered bad luck to cut it in fear of offending the faeries that inhabit it. I wonder how offended these faeries might be?
